LOOK AT ME! … a poem

You’ve hurt me

You’ve humiliated me

You’ve disappointed me

You’ve made me cry

You’ve broken my heart

You’ve broken my spirit

You’ve caused me guilt I cannot deny

You’ve looked at me with contempt, sometimes

You’ve proffered words of poor advice

But I forgive and love you

No matter what

As I see you in the mirror

Looking back into my eyes

FINAL PORTRAIT… a poem

The shards of glass

Show sides of me

I don’t think I was ever meant to see

Memories of loved ones

Gone long ago

Haunt my mind like a salacious foe

Love and hate – empty and full

Reflecting the dark-side in this poor soul

Childhood kindness

Like holding hands

Whispering secrets

And making plans

Reflecting through tears

Lost in a world

That thrives on our fears

These are the final portraits I see

As life’s vital essence spills from me

CHASING THE HORIZON.. a poem

“I am not now, nor shall I ever be,

Sated with this life of philosophy!”

Those were the last words I thought I would hear

Whispered from the lips of the one I held dear.

Then a palpable change settled in the room,

And I wondered aloud, “Could this be our doom?”

And a miracle happened, there before my eyes,

As the body before me started to rise.

Not from some ill-fated ghostly-formed force

No, this was the willingness of quite another source.

Stunned, though I be, as I stood there in wonder,

I couldn’t help but smile at the small clap of thunder.

You see, a storm had been raging outside,

As if in this room, where I gazed full of pride.

She then lay back down, content and enlightened.

With her last words she smiled – “I’ll be chasing the horizon!”

ASHES… a poem

The ashes are all that’s left

Of the woman I loved so dear.

These callused hands once held her close

While these lips whispered in her ear.

Now, I say, I love you.

I will repeat those words every day.

And in my mind, I still hear your reply

Because, it was always that way.

Roads… a poem of life

How difficult does your road have to be

Is it filled with potholes

Or as smooth as the sea

Is it scattered with pebbles

And filled with cracks

Are there mountains or molehills

Or well-worn down tracks

Trace, Sand, Tire Tracks, Sea

Is it uphill or down

Which way do you go

Do you have a destination

Are you stuck in the snow

Is your path blocked by a rock slide

Or fallen down tree

What gets in your way

When you’re trying to see

woman standing between narrow cave pathway

Do you look for specs

In another one’s eye

When the log in your own

Could cause you to die

Take care on your travels

For they lead to the past

Find the smooth road ahead

Because it all goes too fast

LITTLE RED MOTH… a silly poem

Oh, little red moth

How cute you are.

Sitting on my desk

Should I put you in a jar?

Should take you all around

And show you to my peeps?

Should I move you with the stealth

Of a fighting, ninja priest.

No, I think this time

I’ll just wipe you away.

Because you’re not a moth at all.

Nope! You’re dried strawberry flake!

REACH OUT… a poem

How can it be that we turn our heads,

Or walk past the struggling man?

A simple act of kindness, as it’s called today,

Was always part of God’s plan.

“Do unto others…” wasn’t just a line

From a book that is centuries old.

No, it’s called being human, with a heart that gives

To another with love in your soul.

So, slow down and help that person in need

And reach out with a helping hand.

When you lift someone up from a place of despair

Then and there you’ll finally understand.

NATURE’S EYE

Throw light into the shadows

Cast your visage to the wind

The long, long night has ended

As the sun does shine again

The waters reflect the beauty

From the peaks of mountains high

The breeze is hush upon the glade

With nimbus clouds above

Surely nothing can compare

A picturesque parade of love

My first book… it’s getting closer!

Here is the cover for my first book of poetry. What do you think? I took this photo on a fishing trip in June 2019 while out in the Gulf of Mexico off the Alabama gulf coast. It seemed only natural to use this picture as it captured the grandeur of God’s morning portrait. Naturally, there is a fishing rod in the foreground which is perfect for me.

Wish me luck! All the writing has been completed, and the formatting seems to be okay, so… I need some more input from my editors (wife and a friend) and then I can set a release date. I can’t wait to leave a little something behind for my children and grandchildren.
